His book, 36 Hours to live: The Diary of a Teenage Suicide, has been studied in hundreds of high schools and colleges around the world. The best known of his lighter work includes the series of Raymond Masters Mysteries, and Bonnie Brewster Romances.

His alter ego, Grampa Gray, has written a witty or pointed poem each day for over forty years ("...whether it deserved to be written or not."). "Grampa" has published six books of humorous verse and homespun philosophy, especially prepared for the "past fifty" set. They have recently been combined into one volume - In Praise of the Commonplace.
